In 1959 radio DJ Peter Tripp stayed awake for 8 days straight (201 hours) to raise money for the March of Dimes. After a few days, he began to hallucinate, seeing cobwebs, mice, kittens; looking through drawers for money that wasn't there; insisting that a technician had dropped a hot electrode into his shoe. By the end of the marathon Tripp was convinced the neurologist brought in to check on him was actually an undertaker who was going to bury him alive. He could no longer distinguish between reality and nightmare. So yeah, sleep is important.
